On Our Shelf : : Jack’s Christmas
For many, the holidays mean travel – going on an adventure to visit with loved ones, often facing some unforeseen obstacles along the way (lost baggage, anyone?) As we mentioned earlier this week when discussing ways to lessen holiday stress on your little one, social stories are a great way of preparing for unusual events such as holiday travel, which brings us to the current book we are enjoying, Jack’s Christmas by J. Paige Straley. The book is actually another illustrated poem, captivating for both the young and older.
The story is of a rabbit’s journey to see his family through cold winter wind and ice. The pictures are beautiful and interesting. But what makes this book truly special is the fact that is seems written specifically to be read aloud, vivid images easily rising from the written word. At the end of the book, there are prompts to write out your own adventure in holiday travel. It has sparked conversations around the table of people’s most memorable holiday trip, helping to deepen connections across generations as our young children hear of their grandparent’s childhood memories.…
